Cause of methemoglobinemia: illness versus nitrate exposure.

To the contrary, the information presented by Knobeloch et al. (1) support my conclusions (2). Knobeloch et al. (1) described two purported cases of infantile methemoglobinemia in their paper. The diagnosis of methemoglobinemia in case 1, however, is completely speculative: a doctor did not examine the infant, and blood methemoglobin concentrations were not measured during the observed anoxia. ...

Drinking-Water Nitrate, Methemoglobinemia, and Global Burden of Disease: A Discussion

On behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO), I have undertaken a series of literature-based investigations examining the global burden of disease related to a number of environmental risk factors associated with drinking water. In this article I outline the investigation of drinking-water nitrate concentration and methemoglobinemia. The exposure assessment was based on levels of nitrate in...

Congenital Methemoglobinemia

Congenital methemoglobinemia is a rare cause of cyanosis. We report a case of a girl, 17 years old with peripheral cyanosis and normal cardio-pulmonary system. She was diagnosed as a case of methemoglobinemia based on findings of polycythemia and HbM band on hemoglobin electrophoresis. We emphasize the importance of this rare entity in the differential diagnosis of cyanosis.

About methemoglobinemia.

I would like to add to this well written article that we have also reported acquired methemoglobinemia cases with administration of cytanest in puerperal women with g6PD deficiency and infants in whom erythrocyte cytochrome 65 reductase was assoyed [1-4], which is the main enzyme for methemoglobin reductase in erythrocytes as mentioned by the authors. In addition, hereditary methemoglobinemias ...

Methemoglobinemia and Pulse Oximetry

In reviewing the article “Methemoglobinemia: Sudden Dyspnea and Oxygen Desaturation After Esophagoduodenoscopy,” in the August 2004 issue of RESPIRATORY CARE,1 I found the article suggested that, during the esophagoduodenoscopy procedure the patient’s blood oxygen saturation (measured via pulse oximetry) began to drop rapidly, and a saturation of 54% registered on the pulse oximeter while the p...
